BLADES START WITH DRAW

Chengdu Blades 1 - Liaoning 1

The Blades kicked off the new China Super League season with a well deserved draw against Liaoning

The game broadcast live at 7am this morning on Chinese channel TV Live was of a good standard with both teams playing equally good controlled football in front of a large and vocal home support... The Blades just edging the first half and to be fair should have been leading at half time but for some excellent saves by the visiting goalkeeper

Liaoning began the second half with tempo and the Blades had to defend well to stay level but eventually matched the visitors endeavour and gradually took control and looked the most likely to score, but on 65 minutes, against the run of play the visitors took the lead with a delightful defence splitting pass and finish.

The Blades, roared on by the Red Army of supporters immediately picked up the pace and had several good chances to equalise and on 75 minutes the blades got their reward will a fabulous header from Liu Cheng after a pin-point diagonal cross from outside the right edge of the box... on 86 minutes the Blades should have won-it but the cross field ball into the box some how managed to elude 2 Chengdu players.

The Blades looked really good on the ball and not overwhelmed by the prospect of playing in China's top league

The Chinese football association has suspended Liaoning goalkeeper and assistant coach Jiang Tao for six matches and fined him 6,000 yuan ($860) after an altercation with a referee's assistant during the club's season opener against Chengdu.

Jiang, who was on the bench for last weekend's match, charged onto the field to remonstrate over an offside decision and was given the season's first red card after nearly coming to blows with the official, according to China news portal Sohu.

Chengdu Blades 2-1 Dalian Haichang

Posted on: Mon 14 Apr 2008

Chengdu Blades claimed their biggest scalp since getting promoted to the CSL, with a 2-1 win against China's most successful club, Dalian Haichang, on Saturday.

The match, live on Chinese television, attracted more than 20 million viewers, as the Blades beat Dalian for the first time in four years.

Captain Wang Song was the hero, netting both goals for the home side and in the process he propelled himself to the top of the CSL scoring charts after four rounds.

The first opportunity of the game fell to the visitors, but after good work from Woodlander, Geleekov fired over from inside the area.

After having an earlier free-kick saved, it was Wang Song who opened the scoring in the 27th minute. The Blades captain controlled the ball excellently before firing home, following good work by Zou Peng.

Brazilian striker Rodrigues was brought on at half-time replacing debutant Demar Stewart.

Dalian began the second-half the brighter and in the 51st minute they were level. Zou Jie finished off a free-flowing move from the visitors after Geleekov had played an instrumental part on the right.

The teams were only level for ten minutes though, before the Blades regained the lead. After a mistake by Tang Tian in the Dalian defence, Rodrigues crossed for Wang Song to bag his second from just inside the penalty box.

Haichang tried in vain to find an equaliser, but the Blades held firm to record an historic victory and Blades boss Li Bing, was a happy man after the final whistle:

"I am delighted with the result and very proud of my players. Dalian are one of the very best in China and this win shows our ability at this level.

"The players did everything they could to get a result and the 25,000 plus crowd gave us continuous backing throughout the game."
